Students at Wabannutao Eeyou School in Eastmain filled their blueberry - and their learning - baskets this week with a trip out onto the land.
Teachers and parents chaperoned students on a blueberry-picking excursion Wednesday August 29, 2018. tudents from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 3 went picking in the morning, while pupils in Grades 4 through 6 went in the afternoon.
"Activities like this are not only fun for everyone, but they promote personal learning and connection to our land," said Principal Trevor Mercer. "Students also use their social skills in a different setting, and, with parents volunteering to help, we also deepen that home-school connection."
The Cree School Board has identified land-based education as an important building block for students.
"Blueberry-picking is a traditional activity," Mercer added. "This is just one of the many activities we will do this year that promotes our Cree culture and values."
